Visualising Available Water Capacity in Soil - your chance to help design a new visual tool

The Soil Tech Project is translating soil science into digital soil management tools for land managers. It is an exciting project! When we translate the science, we start by interviewing the people who will be using the tools to get an understanding about how they experience things in their every day work.

We are currently translating research about Available Water Capacity in soil. During User Experience interviews we discovered that part of the problem is that it is difficult to discuss available water capacity because we cant ’see’ into the soil. That was an ‘aha’ moment!

We have now engaged a team of Visual Communication Designers who are developing a new visual language for soil, starting with a representation of Available Water Capacity. We would love to show you what the team have come up with so far, and have your input into how these schematics evolve.

Andrea Koch will be running some focus groups via ZOOM over the next two weeks. If you can spare 45 minutes we would very much appreciate having your input. We would also like to have some kids involved in this, so if you have children and they would like to participate with you, they would be welcome.

The group times are:

  • Thursday 7th May - 3.30pm

  • Friday 8th May - 10.30am or 2pm

  • Saturday 9th May - 11am

  • Thursday 14th May - 8.30am
